State Farm Auto Collision Claim Guide

How to report a State Farm auto claim, what to have ready, and how repair coordination generally works after a collision in California.

This is an independent guide. Capital Collision Center is not affiliated with or endorsed by State Farm and is not an approved or direct repair facility of State Farm. State Farm is named only to identify its claims process.

Before you file a State Farm claim

After a collision it helps to know where to start. This guide walks through the reporting options State Farm lists on its official claims page, general preparation that applies to most claims, and how repair coordination commonly works once a claim is open.

State Farm decides how your claim is handled under your policy. Nothing here is a statement of what State Farm will cover, pay, or require. Follow your adjuster's instructions and your policy terms, and treat the State Farm claims page as the source for current procedures.

How to report a State Farm auto claim

According to the State Farm claims page, a claim can be reported online, through the State Farm app, or by phone. These steps follow that page; your own situation may differ.

  1. Make sure everyone is safe and move out of traffic if you can. Call emergency services if anyone is hurt or the scene is unsafe.
  2. Choose how you want to report: online, in the State Farm app, or by phone. The State Farm claims page lists the current phone contact details, so check it rather than relying on a number copied from somewhere else.
  3. Start the claim and describe what happened with the information you have. If you are unsure about a detail, say so instead of guessing.
  4. Write down your claim number and the name and contact details of the person handling your claim as soon as you receive them.
  5. Use State Farm's claim status tools or contact your claim representative to follow progress, and respond promptly when State Farm asks for documents, photos, or a time to look at the vehicle.
  6. Proceed through the estimate and repair steps your claim directs. If you have chosen a shop, tell your adjuster which one so the next steps can be coordinated.

Information to gather before you report

This is general preparation advice, separate from State Farm's own instructions. You do not need every item before you report; give what you have and add the rest as it becomes available.

  • Your State Farm policy number and, once you have it, the claim number.
  • Vehicle year, make, model, and where the vehicle is now.
  • Date, time, and location of the incident, and a short description of what happened.
  • Names and contact details of other drivers, passengers, or witnesses, plus their insurance information if you were able to exchange it.
  • Photos of all vehicles, the damage, and the scene, taken from several angles.
  • A police report number, if a report was made.
  • The name and phone number or email of your adjuster or claim representative.

What happens after you report

Once a claim is reported, State Farm may review coverage and the damage, ask for more documentation, or ask to inspect the vehicle. What it asks for, and in what order, depends on your policy and the details of the claim.

You may be asked to provide an estimate, photos, or other information, and your adjuster will explain the next steps. The official claims page describes tracking status and moving through the estimate and repair steps; how long each stage takes is decided case by case and is not something this guide can predict.

If a repair estimate is prepared, you can share it with your adjuster. If a shop later finds additional damage once work begins, it can describe what it found so the scope can be discussed with your adjuster. Whether any change is accepted, and what is paid, is State Farm's decision under your policy.

Coverage, your deductible, rental car benefits, parts decisions, inspections, authorization of repairs, and payment all depend on your policy and your claim. A shop estimate does not guarantee that State Farm will pay a particular amount.

Choosing a repair shop in California

California's the California Department of Insurance Auto Body Repair Consumer Bill of Rights explains that you may select the auto body shop that repairs your vehicle, that an insurer shall not require repairs at a specific shop, and that you may seek an independent estimate from a registered auto body repair shop. This is general information, not legal advice. Read the source for the exact wording.

In practice, repair coordination usually means three things: you tell your adjuster which shop you have chosen, the shop prepares an estimate of the repairs it sees, and the shop and adjuster communicate about the scope of work. Ask your adjuster what State Farm needs from the shop, such as an estimate or photos, and ask the shop what it needs from you.

If you would like to compare an estimate while your claim is open, Capital Collision Center can look at your vehicle or photos. Call (818) 472-9222 or request an estimate online. Our collision repair work and any estimate remain subject to your claim and to State Farm's decisions.

State Farm claim questions

How can I report a State Farm auto claim?

State Farm's official claims page says you can report a claim online, through the State Farm app, or by phone. Check that page for the current options and phone contact details, and follow your adjuster's instructions.

What should I have ready before I report?

It helps to have your policy number, vehicle details, the date and location of the incident, other parties' information, photos, and any police report number. You do not need all of it to start a claim, and you can add details as you get them.

Can I check the status of my claim?

State Farm's claims page describes tracking claim status. For specifics about your claim, use the status options State Farm provides or contact your claim representative.

Do I have to use a particular repair shop?

According to the California Department of Insurance Auto Body Repair Consumer Bill of Rights, you may select the shop, and an insurer shall not require repairs at a specific shop. This is general information, not legal advice. Talk with your adjuster about how State Farm coordinates with the shop you choose.

Does a repair estimate mean State Farm will pay for it?

No. An estimate describes the repairs a shop sees. Whether State Farm covers them, and how much it pays, depends on your policy, your deductible, and State Farm's review of the claim.
