Liberty Mutual Auto Collision Claim Guide
This is an independent guide. Capital Collision Center is not affiliated with or endorsed by Liberty Mutual and is not an approved or direct repair facility of Liberty Mutual. Liberty Mutual is named only to identify its claims process.
Before you file a Liberty Mutual claim
If you have a Liberty Mutual auto policy and your vehicle was damaged in a collision, you will want to know how to start the claim, what details to have on hand, and what usually happens between the first report and the repair. This guide summarizes what Liberty Mutual's public auto claims page describes and adds general preparation advice, kept clearly separate.
Liberty Mutual handles your claim under the terms of your policy. Nothing here says what Liberty Mutual will cover, pay, or require, and the steps it uses can differ from one claim to the next. Follow your adjuster's instructions and your policy terms, and use Liberty Mutual's own pages for current procedures.

How to report a Liberty Mutual auto claim
The Liberty Mutual auto claims page describes filing a claim online or through your account and tracking it afterward. These steps are a general sequence, not Liberty Mutual instructions, so check that page for current options.
- Make sure everyone is safe and move out of traffic if you can. Call emergency services if anyone is hurt or the scene is unsafe.
- Go to the Liberty Mutual auto claims page and follow its options to file, signing in to your account if the page asks you to. If you would rather not file online, look on the page or on your policy documents for another way to reach Liberty Mutual.
- Enter the basic details of the incident, including the approximate date and what happened. If you are not sure of a detail, say so rather than guessing.
- Describe the damage and add photos if the claim process asks for them or lets you. Whether photos are enough, or an in-person inspection is needed, is for Liberty Mutual to decide on your claim.
- Write down your claim number and the name and contact details of anyone assigned to your claim.
- Use the claim tracking tools Liberty Mutual describes to see where the claim stands, and respond promptly to requests for information.
Information to gather before you report
This is general preparation advice, separate from Liberty Mutual's own instructions. You do not need every item before you report; give what you have and add the rest as it becomes available.
- Your Liberty Mutual policy number and, once assigned, your claim number.
- Vehicle year, make, model, license plate, and current location.
- The approximate date, time, and location of the incident, plus a short description in your own words.
- Other drivers' names, contact details, vehicles, and insurance information, and any witnesses.
- Photos of the damage and the scene from several angles, if you can take them safely.
- A police report number, if one was made.
- Contact details for your adjuster or claim representative, once you have them.
What happens after you report
After you report, Liberty Mutual may review your coverage and the damage, ask for more information or documents, or arrange a damage review. The page describes damage review, including photos where applicable, followed by estimate and repair steps. Whether your claim is handled with photos, an inspection, or something else depends on the claim and on Liberty Mutual.
Keep your claim number handy for every contact, and keep notes of what you were told and when. Ask your adjuster what they need from you next and what the next step is.
If a repair estimate is prepared, you can share it with your adjuster. If more damage is found once repairs begin, the shop can describe it so that the scope can be discussed with Liberty Mutual. Whether a change is accepted, and what is paid, is Liberty Mutual's decision under your policy.
Coverage, deductible, rental, parts, inspection, authorization, and payment all depend on your policy and your claim. An estimate from any shop does not guarantee payment by Liberty Mutual.
Choosing a repair shop in California
The California Department of Insurance Auto Body Repair Consumer Bill of Rights explains that you may select the auto body shop that repairs your vehicle, that an insurer shall not require repairs at a specific shop, and that you may seek an independent estimate from a registered auto body repair shop. This is general information, not legal advice. Read the source for the exact wording.
Repair coordination generally involves you telling your Liberty Mutual adjuster which shop you have chosen, the shop writing an estimate of the damage it finds, and the shop and adjuster communicating about that scope. Ask Liberty Mutual what it needs from the shop, and ask the shop what it needs from you.
If you would like an estimate from Capital Collision Center while your claim is open, call (818) 472-9222 or request one online. Our collision repair work and any estimate remain subject to your claim and to Liberty Mutual' decisions.
Liberty Mutual claim questions
What information does Liberty Mutual ask for first?
Liberty Mutual's claims page describes entering basic incident details, such as the approximate date and what happened. Have your policy number, vehicle details, and any photos ready, but you can add information later if you do not have everything.
Are photos enough, or will my car need an inspection?
That depends on your claim. The Liberty Mutual page describes damage review, including photos where applicable, but it does not mean every claim is handled by photos alone. Your adjuster will tell you what is needed.
Can I track my Liberty Mutual claim?
The Liberty Mutual auto claims page describes tracking a claim after it is filed. Check that page and your account for the tools currently available, and keep your claim number handy.
Do I have to use a particular repair shop?
According to the California Department of Insurance Auto Body Repair Consumer Bill of Rights, you may select the shop, and an insurer shall not require repairs at a specific shop. This is general information, not legal advice. Ask your Liberty Mutual adjuster how they coordinate with the shop you choose.
What if more damage is found during repairs?
The shop can describe the additional damage so it can be discussed with your adjuster. Whether the change is accepted, and what is paid, is Liberty Mutual's decision under your policy, so follow your adjuster's instructions.
