Farmers Auto Collision Claim Guide

How to reach Farmers to report an auto claim, how to organize your claim details, and how repair coordination generally works in California.

This is an independent guide. Capital Collision Center is not affiliated with or endorsed by Farmers and is not an approved or direct repair facility of Farmers. Farmers is named only to identify its claims process.

Before you file a Farmers claim

If you have a Farmers auto policy and your vehicle was damaged in a collision, the first practical question is who to contact. This guide covers the Farmers contact options this site has verified, what to write down and gather, and how repair coordination generally works once a claim is open.

Farmers handles your claim under the terms of your policy. Nothing here says what Farmers will cover, pay, or require. Follow your adjuster's instructions and your policy terms, and use Farmers' own pages for current procedures.

For broader background, see our page on insurance claim assistance, or read how a collision repair estimate works at our Van Nuys shop.

How to report a Farmers auto claim

The Farmers claims page directs claim reporting to 1-800-435-7764 or to your Farmers agent. The Farmers website may also offer other claim tools, so check it for current options. These steps are a general sequence, not Farmers instructions.

  1. Make sure everyone is safe and move out of traffic if you can. Call emergency services if anyone is hurt or the scene is unsafe.
  2. Contact Farmers at 1-800-435-7764, or contact your Farmers agent, to report the claim. Use the number on your policy documents or the Farmers website if you want to confirm it.
  3. Explain what happened, where the vehicle is, and whether it can be driven. Give the details you have and say so when you are unsure.
  4. Write down your claim number and the name and phone number of the representative you speak with.
  5. Ask how to send photos or documents and how a damage review will be arranged, so you know what the representative expects from you.
  6. Watch for a follow-up from a Farmers representative, return calls and requests promptly, and keep notes of each conversation with the date.

Information to gather before you report

This is general preparation advice, separate from Farmers's own instructions. You do not need every item before you report; give what you have and add the rest as it becomes available.

  • Your Farmers policy number and, once assigned, your claim number.
  • Vehicle year, make, model, license plate, and current location.
  • Date, time, and location of the incident, plus a short description in your own words.
  • Other drivers' names, contact details, vehicles, and insurance information, and any witnesses.
  • Photos of the damage and the scene from several angles.
  • A police report number, if one was made.
  • Your agent's name and phone number, and the name of the Farmers representative handling the claim.

What happens after you report

After a claim is reported, a Farmers representative may follow up to ask questions, review coverage and damage, request documents, or arrange an inspection. What happens next depends on your policy and the facts of the claim.

Ask the representative how to provide photos or paperwork and how the damage review will be arranged. Keep the claim number handy for every call, and keep notes of what you were told.

If a repair estimate is prepared, you can share it with your representative or adjuster. If additional damage is found after repairs begin, the shop can describe it so the scope can be discussed with Farmers. Whether a change is accepted, and what is paid, is Farmers' decision under your policy.

Coverage, deductible, rental, parts, inspection, authorization, and payment all depend on your policy and your claim. An estimate from any shop does not guarantee payment by Farmers.

Choosing a repair shop in California

California's the California Department of Insurance Auto Body Repair Consumer Bill of Rights explains that you may select the auto body shop that repairs your vehicle, that an insurer shall not require repairs at a specific shop, and that you may seek an independent estimate from a registered auto body repair shop. This is general information, not legal advice. Read the source for the exact wording.

Repair coordination generally involves you telling your Farmers representative which shop you have chosen, the shop writing an estimate of the damage it finds, and the shop and representative communicating about that scope. Ask Farmers what it needs from the shop, and ask the shop what it needs from you.

If you would like an estimate from Capital Collision Center while your claim is open, call (818) 472-9222 or request one online. Our collision repair work and any estimate remain subject to your claim and to Farmers' decisions.

Farmers claim questions

Who do I contact to report a Farmers auto claim?

The Farmers claims page directs claim reporting to 1-800-435-7764 or to your Farmers agent. Farmers may also offer other tools on its website, so check farmers.com/claims for current options.

What should I prepare before I call?

Have your policy number, vehicle details, the date and location of the incident, other parties' information, photos, and any police report number. You can still report without all of it and add details later.

What should I do after I report?

Write down your claim number and your representative's name and phone number, return calls and requests promptly, and follow your adjuster's instructions. Ask how to send photos or documents and how a damage review will be arranged.

Do I have to use a particular repair shop?

According to the California Department of Insurance Auto Body Repair Consumer Bill of Rights, you may select the shop, and an insurer shall not require repairs at a specific shop. This is general information, not legal advice. Ask your Farmers representative how they coordinate with the shop you choose.

Does an estimate mean Farmers will cover the repair?

No. An estimate describes the repairs a shop sees. Coverage, your deductible, and payment depend on your policy and on Farmers' review of the claim.
