Who Pays for a Rental Car After an Accident?

It depends. Your own policy pays for a rental only if you bought rental reimbursement coverage, which usually has daily and total limits. If another party is responsible, a claim against that party's insurer may be possible, but fault and amounts are decided case by case. Nothing guarantees a rental for the length of a repair.

The short answer

It depends. Your own policy pays for a rental only if you bought rental reimbursement coverage, which usually has daily and total limits. If another party is responsible, a claim against that party's insurer may be possible, but fault and amounts are decided case by case. Nothing guarantees a rental for the length of a repair.

General information, not legal advice. Coverage and claim outcomes depend on policy terms and individual facts.

Two different routes

The California Department of Insurance's auto insurance guide explains that coverages are separate: collision coverage deals with damage to your car, and rental reimbursement is its own coverage you choose to buy. Without it, your own policy may not pay for a rental at all.

  • Your own policy. If you bought rental reimbursement, the policy sets how much it pays per day and in total, and when it starts and stops.
  • A claim against another party. If someone else caused the accident, you may be able to ask that party's insurer about your cost of being without a car. Whether it responds, and how much, depends on fault and the facts. A repair shop does not decide it.

Questions for your insurer

  • Do I have rental reimbursement? What is the daily limit and the maximum number of days or dollars?
  • Do I have to use a specific rental company, or can I choose?
  • Does the insurer need to authorize the rental in advance?
  • Which extra charges are covered, such as taxes, fees, insurance or fuel, and which are mine?
  • What date or event ends the coverage, for example the repair being finished or a total-loss settlement offer?
  • If another driver's insurer is responsible, where do I send my rental receipts?

Keep records

Save the rental agreement, daily rate, receipts, the dates you had the car, and every message with the insurer. If repairs take longer than your rental coverage lasts, ask in writing what applies to your situation. Limits may end before repairs do.

What this shop can and cannot do

Capital Collision Center does not promise a rental vehicle or a free rental, and we cannot guarantee a completion date. We can give you an estimate and explain the repair work. Your coverage, and any claim against another party, are matters for your insurer.

Frequently asked questions

Will my insurance pay for a rental while my car is in the shop?

Only if your policy includes rental reimbursement, or if another party's insurer accepts responsibility. Check your policy for the limits.

Can the rental end before my repair is done?

It can. Limits are often per day and in total, and a total-loss settlement may end coverage. Ask for the end date in writing.
